Creative Halloween Costumes for Kids’ Wheelchairs

October 20, 2015 by Marina Klima Leave a Comment

I am not a big Halloween lover, but this year is different. I’m taking my mother out for Halloween! Apparently, my mother is a wheelchair user now, and I am always looking for accessible places for her in addition to Ability Expo. So when I showed her an article about Halloween costumes for kids’ wheelchairs she was amazed.

Halloween was always a thing she liked. Besides, strolling the streets doesn’t require steps which makes it easier for me to roll her around. What’s important is that she would enjoy the kids’ costumes and breathe in some positive energy. This would give her something to talk about for weeks!  All I have to do is push the chair either down the block or at the mall.

Suddenly, her eyes widened, “What do the kids – wheelchair users do for Halloween? How do they make their costumes?”

So, of course, I googled and found some talented people that make them. I  was blown away by the stories of love and creativity!  I spent hours looking at them online and then fell in love with Cassie McLelland’s creations.

And, of course, I cannot resist sharing my favorites with you:

Hero Sports Car Costume Kit for a Kid’s Wheelchair

This is one of my favorites. This roadster is another version of the iconic Batmobile.  It is a ground-pounding, tire-shredding beast. The finish is striking Tuxedo Black. It looks sharp and ready for a heart-thumping ride ahead. Of course, my inner designer appreciates the details, such as artfully corrugated front. To top it off, this handsome beast has striking accessories, both in the front part and in the back.

Now her Royal Highness has a beautiful carriage to arrive at the ball and wow everyone with her elegance and style. The bright color is a show stopper, and the details make it even more classy. Her Royal Highness will be a talk of the town!

Lady Bug Costume Kit for Halloween Costume Wheelchair

This adorable ladybug wheelchair costume cracks me up. My favorites are the lashes, the antenna, and the license plate. No police will ever dare to stop this cutie! She is invincible, and she is winning hearts.

This costume is for a serious construction worker. Put your hardhat on and stay away from the construction site if you don’t want to pay a major fine.  Stylish black and yellow wheels are so cool! It can do so much more than just digging.

All the costumes are sturdy as the main material is upcycled cardboard. They have a double-wall cardboard for the sides, and the part that goes for the width is made of single cardboard to make sure that it bends easier for adjustments. Most importantly, they fit a pediatric wheelchair.  The width of many costumes can be customized. All you need to do is use sturdy glue, such as hot glue.

Which kid’s costume is your favorite? Please tell me in the comments below. Happy Halloween!
