Who cares about bathroom tile trends and ideas that never stay? Pink, blush, subway, blue, green! The truth is that none of us rebuilds a bathroom in a year or two, right? So, why am I even writing this post and wasting your time?
Here is why:
The Difference Between a Fad and a Trend
Apparently, every classic decorating style started with a humble trend. It’s like Chanel’s little black dress concept. Enough people picked it up and before you know it became an icon. The same with interior design. Practical, useful and beautiful trends are here to stay. Weird and crazy fads are like a one night stand. They never stay.
Because I watched the market and the trends for a while, I came up with lasting trends examples of bathroom tiles and design.
Here I share some bathroom tile ideas that will help you to save money for your next inspiring bathroom!
Herringbone Bathroom Tiles
Herringbone bathroom tiles, both on the walls and the floors are in. I like herringbone because it offers an unexpected and easy way to achieve an interesting look. You can play with different colors, textures- from ceramics to marble. Remember, pick grout color to help you define the pattern.
For instance, In the above bathroom, herringbone bathroom tiles have matching grout color for a softer look.
On the opposite, the contrast between the black grout and the white tile creates a dramatic graphic effect. If this is the look you want, consider adding black and white elements with fixtures and furniture.
Timeless Neutral Colors and Black and White Bathroom Tiles
Neutral colors bathroom tile, as well as a black and white combination, are always in style. Use textures, shapes, and patterns if you want a variety without adding strong colors.
Because neutral colors are so forgiving you can use a combination of similar geometrical patterns but on a different scale for the backsplash and the floor. As a result, the bathroom will look so fine that you might never want to leave it.
Less is more, sometimes. Instead of covering all walls, highlight one wall with waterjet mosaics. By the way, notice that this shower above is barrier-free with a linear drain installed in the back. The design is not only stunning but also highly functional for people that use a wheelchair.

Patterns-Field Bathroom Tiles
Patterned tile (called field tile) is here to stay for a long time thanks to the Boho style movement as well as the love for the mid-century design. Be careful not to overdo it. A pattern- on-pattern design is lovely if done right.
I love the bathroom above. The pattern is used in juxtaposition to solid color tile, and it lets your eye appreciate the pattern much more than if it was all over.

Cement Look Bathroom Tile
Choose a minimalistic style and use concrete tiles while introducing natural elements, such as rustic or reclaimed wood. Very cool! Cement look is not just for commercial spaces anymore. It can look very cool in residential bathrooms.
Statement Colors for Bathroom Tiles
Statement colors for bathroom tiles are confidently coming back. They made a timid entrance with pastels and then blossomed into a variety of shades and tones that are much stronger.

For example, check out these dreamy bathrooms!
Creative Use of Terrazzo Bathroom Tiles
Terrazzo s a trend that will stay for a long time according to industry predictions. In addition, the terrazzo bathroom tile is not just for the floors. Finally, they are part of wall finishes as well as sinks and even faucets.
Using the Geometry of Penny Rounds for Bathroom Tiles
It all started with creative designers who were using recycled bottle caps for wall art. Consequently, the penny rounds trend was picked up by tile manufacturers and it became instantly popular. Now penny rounds bathroom tile come in any imaginable color. Color blocking with penny rounds is fun and easy to perform since they are readily available in major home decorating stores.
Art Deco Bathroom Tile
Energetic, sexy, and powerful the Art Deco style is now revived as it received a modern spin. Apparently, it is not limited to architecture and furniture. Because of modern technology and printing capabilities, you can have Art Deco-inspired bathroom tiles in a variety of patterns.
New Art Deco style backsplash is all about the geometry of different forms in this bathroom. The gold finish of the lighting fixtures, the faucet, and the mirror create a composition while nickel pulls for the vanity work with the gray floor. In addition, the vanity looks like a fine furniture piece that effortlessly floats above the surface. The look is equally rustic and refined.
Fantasy Marble Bathroom Tiles
It is always fun to interpret nature. There is nothing remotely boring about a backsplash in fantasy marble! It comes in many colors so brace yourself since options are unlimited.
Ombre Effect Bathroom Tiles
Remember ombre a few years ago and my interview by Sherwin Williams as well as Vision Magazine on the subject? Finally, the ombre effect is available in bathroom tiles. You can wake up every morning and observe a gentle gradation of colors in your own bathroom.
What is out?
Lastly, if you are on the preliminary stages just dreaming about a new bathroom, please bear in mind that a stripe of listello is out of style. Stay away from it because it will date your house.
I am fascinated to see so many options and bathroom tile designs. I just scratched the surface here in this article, but please tell me what you think.

Hi Marina,
You were so helpful on fabric choices for my new couch that I was thrilled to see that you had some information on tiles for bathrooms.
I am redoing my very small bath which includes replacing a fiberglass unit with a tiled shower, new tiled bathroom floor and vanity and sink.
The length of the bathroom is only 67 inches and the tile will be going the long way. I originally picked out a beautiful gray wood like tile that is 8 x 40. I read somewhere that the bigger the tile it will make your bathroom look bigger along with light colors etc.
However, I am concerned that it will look awkward because I can only fit one tile and a little over a half along the length.
I am now looking at other options right now like 8 x 24 and even a different kind of tile like 12 x 24 but not a wood look.
Thoughts?

Hi Andrea,
Thanks for letting me know that I was helpful! it means the world to me. There are many elements that will help your bathroom look larger, and not necessarily a very large tile. 8×24 seems to be more reasonable size if it will be cut off. But I need to see your layout. Color is important, lighting etc. Please send me the pictures. Thanks!

Hi Marina,
Thank you for getting back to me so soon. I am attaching two pictures. However, it might be difficult to tell because the bathroom isn’t remodeled yet and it is so outdated.
The first picture has 2 planks laid down of the 8 x 40 tile. I was drawn to the tile originally by the colors, the wood look, and how well it coordinated with the other tiles I picked out. Some tile store reps (at different stores) are saying 8 x 40 is fine in the space and some are saying too big.
The second picture I added the shower wall tile and the shower floor tile. The shower wall tile is mostly white with a faint gray vein going through it (glossy) I will also replace the fixtures including a white toilet and white vanity with white quartz counter top. I will paint the bathroom a light gray like BM Classic Gray or SW Worldly Gray. However, most of the time the blinds are turned shut because this is a street facing bathroom so I might go with Classic Gray as it is lighter.
Again the bathroom length is only 67 inches and the shower is to the left.
What do you think?
Thanks again. Andrea

Hi Andrea,
If the goal is to make your bathroom look larger- longer, yes the long tile will visually extend the look of it. If the goal is to make it look wider (I see that it is quite narrow) then it will look even more narrow because the attention will be on the length totally. If you want it to look proportionate, use a shorter tile for the floor. BM Classic Gray, I like more. You can also install the tile across if you want the bathroom to look just a bit wider. I hope it helps.

Thanks Marina,
You make an excellent point. The bathroom is both short and narrow. I guess I was hung up on finding a wood like tile because I really liked the look and all of these tiles are more narrow.
I did see some 12 x 24 tiles that were nice, so I will go in that direction and with extremely narrow grout lines.
Andrea
I think BM Classic Gray will be nice too, and it will be a soft transition to gray and help give the illusion of a bigger bathroom as well.
