How to Place a Rug Under a Bed: Area Rug Placement

March 15, 2018 by Marina Klima 50 Comments

Just similar to the living room, area rug placement in the bedroom is always a matter of taste and figuring out what elements are the most important to you. So, again, there are no rules, just guidelines to help you make your decision.  Of course, we all want something soft underfoot when we get up. It is true especially if the floor is tiled while hardwood floor is a bit for pleasant to step on. Some people want the rug to extend beyond the bed area and to be placed under the night tables. Others can’t care less.  Here below are some examples of the area rug placements together with my comments and obsessively curated area rugs I found for you. I hope will help you with your own choices of the area rugs for your bedroom.

Please note: this post has affiliate links. It means that we make a small commission referring to sites. But if you make a purchase you will never ever pay one cent more than if you go directly to an online store. In addition, we ONLY recommend brands that we know and trust.

Here the area rug placement is such that the night tables are not on the rug. This beautiful and feminine bedroom boasts a very pretty area rug with a one-directional pattern.  Turning the rug the other way was not an option. Instead of a larger underfoot coverage by the bed area, the rug extends to cover the sitting area uniting the two functions of the bedroom- lounging and sleeping.

A decidedly bohemian vibe of this bedroom is carefree and casual. Rustic, country elements coexist with contemporary black and white prints showcasing countryside scenes. The area rug placement is not important for those who live here. They would rather display the full pattern of the area rug!

Ahhh, don’t you want to get under the blanket in this cozy bedroom? It is all about textures. A thick area rug is underfoot as soon as you get up in the morning. Its natural texture makes you feel warm and comfortable. Feminine and masculine elements and colors are doing a “happy dance” here. Rough brick wall and geometric patterns of the wall art are juxtaposed with the softness of the textiles. Mixed metal colors add interest. How cool is this warm bedroom!

A small bedroom is designed so that it can function well without feeling space deprived. The bed is with the legs so that vacuuming and cleaning are easier under a flat weave area rug. The area rug is thin and its color creates unity with the colors of the upholstered bed and the bedding. The textures are playing with each other. A lighting pendant is strategically installed on the ceiling to empty a small bedroom dresser for books and magazines. A separate working area is created with a floating desk area and a beautiful wood wall panel that extends to the ceiling making a visual impact. The bookshelves are tucked in the corner.  A small footprint chair works perfectly by the desk area.

Here is another example of an ingenious design concept. This is obviously a guy’s room that provides for many storage options, both under the bed and within the furniture.  It has a working area as well as a creatively designed sitting area so that the guests can collaborate on a project with ease. The construction is a no-nonsense organic structure at different levels for working, sitting and entertaining.  The area rug placement is underfoot as it defines the sleeping area of the bedroom.

Softness and glamor coexist in this tiny bedroom with no option for an area rug. Instead, a fluffy pelt touches the overworked feet of the ballerina when she gets up moving forward instead of sideways. It is obviously not a problem for her to get up this way!

Shop Natural Sheepskin Pelts

A successful pattern on the pattern design concept is a lot of fun here! Black and white textured area rug placement is underfoot. Its pattern is juxtaposed with a checker of the bedding. Black and white geometry is broken with bright coral accents and a herringbone design of the wallpaper. The room is both masculine and feminine. It is simple but yet sophisticated.

Shop Black/White/Gray Area Rugs

Soft blush of the pelt and the accent pillow works perfectly with white, dusty blue and natural wood tones. An area rug is not important here, it is just a small area to step on.

The fresh, simple, but yet classy look of this bedroom appeals to someone who feels a need for uncluttering and rejuvenating after a long day. Beautiful ivory and charcoal draperies colors pick up from a large rug. The area rug takes up a major part of the room giving it a simple but sophisticated look. Creams and beiges of the bedding and the light fixture are pretty. The two-color schemes are interesting together but a bit disconnected to my taste. It feels like something is missing here.

Shop Modern Rugs

The rustic country chic style received a fresh twist as it looks very contemporary in the bedroom. An area rug placement is perfect for yoga practice or meditation. Just use the floor pillows for support and you are all set.

Natural elements are in the cornerstone of this design. A rugged area rug is underfoot grounding and connecting you with earth, reminding you that you are a part of the universe, a part of nature, charging you with a sacred energy every morning! Love that!

**P.S. here is something extra for you that I put together. It is a diagram of different options for area rug placement in the bedroom. Let me know if it helps.

I’m trying to pull together a black bed with a walnut dresser and walnut floors. The dresser faces the foot of the bed and my room is very wide. My main issue is that the dresser blends into the floor. I’m not sure if I should do one large rug to place beneath everything, layer two rugs or do a medium sized rug that’s 1/3 of the way beneath the bed and completely under the dresser. That would leave my night stands on bare floor. Thanks for your help!

Your diagram shows a queen-size bed with a 6′ x 9′ area rug. Pictorially it covers the floor under the bed, under two night tables, and under a storage bench at the foot of the bed (and even some additional floor space beyond the bench). Please check your measurements. Your 9′ dimension is accurate, if you place both night tables against the side of the bed. My queen bed: 65″ W; each night table 22″ W. Total width: 109″ (fractionally larger than 9′, but it will work). My queen bed is 87″ in length, then add another 18″ for the width of the storage bench. That totals 105″ (8′ 9″). The required area rug would be 9′ x 9′. If the rug needed to cover beyond the storage bench, that dimension would be even longer. There is no way a 6′ x 9′ area rug would cover as much as you depict in your diagram.

I’m confused as to how a 6×9 under a full sized bed can show the same in the drawings as a smaller (5×8) under a larger, queen sized bed. Were these numbers reversed?

Hi, my bedroom is 12 x 15 and we have a king side bed centered, dresser and chest and 1 night stand. I am considering putting an area rug in the bedroom (currently have 2 runners on each side). What are your thoughts, my husband thinks it is a waste to have all of that rug under the bed, that we should just update our runners, maybe add one at the foot of the bed. What are your thoughts? I was thinking that a 8×10 would not overpower the room like a 9×12 would. If I do go with an area rug do I need a pad since the weight of our heavy weight 4 poster bed and adjustable bed frame will surely weigh it down. Thanks for your input.

I enjoyed your post! I have a king bed and have ordered a 9 x12 rug…the 12 feet will have to go under the length of the bed….Do you think it will look ok? I cannot place the rug the other way because of the room size!

Help! I have a bedroom 12.8 ft x 12.11 feet. King size bed. The nightstands along with the bed align completely on the 12.8 side of the wall. In other words there is no space on that side of the wall. What type of rug can I use? The room needs something to warm it up. If i got a 10 x 12 rug, it wont go completely under the nightstands. Is that necessary?

      Marryl,
Can’t you turn the rug around and place it 12 feet to the side with the nightstands? If not, the rug doesn’t have to be all the way under the nightstands. As long as your feet are on the rug. The rug is for your feet to be touching something warm when you get up.

I want to place an area rug under at least part if the bed but I think the dresser will be in the way.. what is the best way to place a rug and best size?

      Hi Debbie,
If one person uses the bed where the nightstand is all you need is a runner. You don’t need the whole big area rug. And it will be easier to clean. The layout of your room is also in question. Usually, your head is facing the door in most layouts. If you still want the existing layout, use 6×9 area rug. If you want to change it, I am sending to your email with the two-floor plans to consider. Lmk if you have questions. The closet is in the room, right?

Ahh, okay I see. Yes, it’s okay if the dressers are partially on the rug but then make sure that it is thin rug so that you don’t trip over. Also, the padding would help to keep it in place.

      Hi Daviece,
I like to use 5×8 rug for a twin day bed making sure that the front legs if the bed are on the rug. You can also use a rug pad so that it doesn’t move. That always helps.

    Hi Marina,
My teenage sons room is square, with queen size bed with storage drawers under it, with headboard in the center of one of the walls. His desk is against a window across from foot of the bed. I’m having trouble figuring our rug placement. if I have rug under the entire bed, it extends to just a tiny bit beyond the bed, and his chair for his desk is not on it (it should be, because otherwise it slides). So I position rug under foot of the bed and the whole desk, and have runners or faux fur on the sides of the bed where he gets up?

      Hi Inna,
If the desk slides you can put a thin rug under it. Make sure that the rug itself doesn’t slide. For this you can use a padding for rugs and even special grips that they sell for the padding. As far as the under-bed rug, I like pelts either natural or faux instead of a rug that goes all the way under the bed. Or small runners. This way it is easier to clean under bed, especially for a teen boy.

I have wall to wall carpet in my bedroom. However, I would like to put a large rug in the room to eliminate the Wear and tear of the carpet. That’s because the master bathroom is
Near the bedroom. Is that feasible and if so, how do I lay out the rug?

      Sure, Judith!
It is perfectly okay to lay an area rug over a wall to wall carpet. You just lay it out the way you would over a hardwood floor.

For a small bedroom (college apartment) where I need to put my full size XL bed 54 x 80 in the corner (left side against wall and head of bed against the wall), where should I put an area rug (size and placement)? I want to add something cozy and homey but don’t want the whole rug to be hidden and unused if placed under the bed.
    Where will it look best?

Umm, did you think about an animal pelt? Either faux or natural? They don’t have a regular shape and you can put it anywhere and change it if you like. They are very cozy and inviting and come in all different colors. You can get it from Home Goods or Home Sense or World Market

Thank you for this post I love it!!
In my work in progress guest bedroom I’ve centred a double bed- do you think two animal pelts would work at either side or just one at the bottom? The space at bottom of bed isnt overally wide so not sure if i should get an area rug.

    Hi Carol,
If you have a pretty circular rug show it off! Don’t try to tuck it all under the bed. If your room allows for it place it so that major part of it is exposed. Don’t be afraid to ruin symmetry because with the circular rug you can place it in front of the bed or to the side. It will still look right. You can also layer it on top of a rectangular rug. Here are some of the examples and diagrams.

      Hi Caolyn,
You should place the rug so that the 10 feet side is parallel to the headboard. I recommend moving it down from the nightstands instead of under the nightstands so that you can see more of the rug in front of the bed. But when you get off the bed you will want to step on the rug, not the wood floor or tile. As long as your feet step on the rug it is all fine.

What kind of rug is it? If it is a rectangular rug, place it parallel to your bed still. You can use a small area rug or animal pelt. you don’t have to have the whole rug, a runner or a small rug underfoot will work.
