How My Obsession with Knitting Started
A knitting grandmother is an image often associated with a woman over sixty who has nothing better to do. However, today it is not true anymore. People are tired of disposable things that lack soul, so they crave unique, handmade sweaters more than ever.
My love story with knitting started when I was nine years old, when I stole a sample notebook from my grandmother. Those samples were meticulously pasted, and they had precise descriptions. Since I was a difficult preteen, I wanted to do something that only adults did, so I taught myself knitting basics.
Not a Day Without Making Something? Not exactly…
I knitted several small things, and then sweaters, one for myself, two for friends, and one for my father. The one that I made for my father turned out to be the most rewarding. He wore it for thirty years on and off. As far as the sweater that I knitted for myself, I ruined it during a fistfight with a girlfriend. I remember how people were pulling us apart so that we wouldn’t kill each other. We survived, but the sweater didn’t.
My knitting history came to a full stop after I had kids, of course. Who has the time to raise the family, work, and knit? Many years later, when kids left the house and COVID locked all of us at home, I took the needles and yarn again just to occupy myself with something to pass the time. Perhaps, I thought that by the time I finished a baby blanket, the lockdown would be over. I don’t know what possessed me to continue when the doors of the houses opened again, but many colorful skeins of yarn grew in my drawers like mushrooms after the rain.
To make a long story short, I renewed my vows with knitting with passion and curiosity. Sometimes, I use YouTube for master classes; other times, I just figure it out on my own.
Because of my interior design background, I am good with colors and design. Putting different colors and textures of yarn together is easy for me, but most importantly, enjoyable.
I learned that something very simple can become more beautiful than a complex pattern. I also learned that knitting is like any other creative process; it takes patience and guts.
As you guessed, in the section of my blog, I’d like to share my projects with you.
Xoxo
