Problems with a Home Alarm System? How to Choose the Right One

June 3, 2019 by Marina Klima Leave a Comment

keys in the door Did you know that 28% of break-ins occur when people are currently at their residence?  That’s because most people who purchase a home alarm system for the first time may run into some problems using it. If you feel that you know how to use the system teach your loved ones how to properly arm and disarm it. Some sophisticated thieves may also be able to hack into your home alarm system. So make sure that you have the most advanced system on the market and that you have installed safeguards to prevent hacking. Below, are some of the most prevalent problems and ways to resolve them.

Most Common Problems With Home Alarm Systems

There are many, do-it-yourself alarm systems out there that either don’t require a monitoring system or don’t come with one.  With most DIY systems, if something occurs you will only receive an email or phone call, which may not be sufficient. Because no one will be available to help twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week you will have to turn to a third party to obtain monitoring services.

Lack of a Backup System

Having a backup power supply is crucial because if the system doesn’t have backup batteries it won’t work if there is a power failure. Even systems with backup power supplies are usually only designed to last 2 days, so you need to plan ahead of time for a worst-case scenario. The lack of a backup or auxiliary monitoring is also an issue with some of the basic alarm systems out there. That is, what would happen if the primary system were to go down due to sabotage or a power outage brought on by a storm or blizzard? From cell phone jamming to phone lines being cut, having a backup system can help save your property and even your life.

Connection Issues with a Home Alarm System

You may run into connection problem from time to time. In some cases, it may be due to the company having communication issues on their end, but sometimes it can be caused by environmental factors that are beyond their control. For example, raccoons chewing through the wires. If you are having wiring or communication issues that are not readily apparent then you will need to call the company.

Let us say that you decided to add an addition to your property. Structural changes may necessitate upgrades to the system.  That is, if you add extra doors and windows to your home then you will need to add extra sensors and detectors to those doors and windows as well.

Installation Problems

Equipment compatibility is yet another issue. In some cases, the security system may be assembled piece by piece. As such, the lack of proper integration may cause the system to fail. To solve this issue the system should be integrated from the get-go. Also, in some cases, the system may not be installed or programmed as intended. Even though a technician is an expert but he is also human, making a mistake is possible. So, ask a professional to come to your home to check the system to make sure that is was installed and programmed properly.

An insufficient number of detectors can also cause issues. If the detectors that you have purchased and installed won’t surveil and cover your entire property then they will be rendered useless. Improper equipment maintenance can also cause issues in time. As with anything else in life, a system will eventually become damaged or outdated with time, so schedule routine maintenance and inspection, at least once a year.

Basic Elements of Standard Home Alarm Systems

A home alarm system will include mobile and web control, three window decals, an image motion sensor, a touch screen control panel, and a powerful siren. It should also include at least three door and window sensors, one-yard sign to deter burglars and intruders, and one keychain remote as well. If the system you are considering purchasing doesn’t include all of the basic features you should continue your research.

How to Choose the Right Home Alarm System

First, you must consider every single possible access point in and around your home that a burglar can access.  You should also hire a reputable company. If the company doesn’t have references or good reviews avoid them. You should never make your final decision based on a simple phone call. For your peace of mind, the company that you end up selecting must backup all of their parts and labor with a certified, money back guarantee.  Take the time to perform the due diligence required to pick a reliable, durable, and comprehensive home alarm system.
